Lullaby (feat. Judy Blank)

about

Five years ago this year, I had my second open heart surgery to cure me of a rare condition called Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension. I had an incredibly complex operation that can only be performed in a handful of centres around the world, and had to spend a long time recovering and undergoing rehabilitation. It was an incredibly taxing time on my family, the immediacy of the surgery and the sense of urgency was palpable; the feeling as though time was running thin was something I had to deal with every day.

It took many years to recover both from the physical and mental implications of this operation, and I still find myself occasionally in a headspace that isn't too logical; perhaps some days I think too much about death, other days perhaps I feel overly attached to others as I recognise how transient this (sometimes) beautiful life can be.

Lullaby is a song that I wrote from the perspective of my Mum, while she is looking over me in the Intensive Care Unit. It's a song that I co-wrote with Judy Blank while on tour earlier this year; lyrically I had come up with the verse ideas, thematically I had thought of a chorus, but Judy was the glue that helped stick it all together. I'm truly thankful to have worked with a wonderfully fresh set of ears, as this song has really been molded into something wonderful by her choices.

lyrics

It's getting close to 6:05
I'm staring at the dawns clean light
While you're peaceful in dreams, I come apart at the seams
Hoping that they save your life

Your heart is a centrifuge
Feel the rhythm raining down on you
Don't be so alarmed,
They mean you no harm
Just do what they're telling you

Sometimes in the setting sun,
It'll feel like it's all gone wrong
And all you see is my ghost,
The lump in your throat; a temple of siren's song

It sounds like a lullaby
Hear the whispers when you close your eyes
Don't fall for its call, don't feel guilty at all
If all you do is wait up all night

Am I the ghost in your picture frame?
Or the mark on your camera lens?
What truly is better, that I'm with you for ever
Or that I'm in a peaceful place

Sometimes in the setting sun
You'll feel like it's all gone wrong
When you look in the mirror, there's nothing but fear
No-one to rely upon

That's when you'll find me
